Featuring Originality

A blog dedicated to bringing attention to the wonderful original characters some people make.

Featuring originality prompt #3

twelvewishes:

The prompt was: How does this character dress? How would they choose to dress, if all options were open to them? Would your character perhaps choose the transvestite option, something that was darker, or just stick with what they usually wore.

Characters: Well, I have four main ones that are almost done being fleshed out, so here they all are.

Ray: Due to being forced to wear stuffy formal clothes that made it a pain to move when he was a child, he now prefers anything that allows him some freedom of movement. Likes plain clothes. Favourite clothing colour: light brown. The more boring the clothes are, the better. Bonus if they can get dirty and the stains are barely visible. Accessorizes with lots of pouches he either attaches to his belt or sews on his clothes. Usually used to hide weapons, but more often then not will also contain funny shaped rocks or shells or whatnot. Shoes: boots that allow fast movements but are durable.

Vigil: Doesn’t really see the point in fashion. Wears mainly dark clothes that don’t get in the way of work. Was a farmer so style still influenced by this. Has taken to wearing sleeveless or short-sleeved shirts because he is rather warmblooded and it makes moving around easier for him. Braces on his forearms because he gets into a lot of fights thanks to Ray and he need it to deflect blows and not get cut. Wears heavy boots he takes special care of because it is difficult getting any in his size. Also keeps a lot of hidden weapons on his body, mainly knuckles and lock-picks.

Monika: Does not care at all about clothes. No matter what she wears, she will still go on grand adventures climbing trees and muddy streams. Prefers to go barefoot, but is rater fond of the soft leather boots she has. They make it easy to move around and keep her warm while not having a sole, so she can still feel the ground under her feet. Would probably collect large quantities of unusual stones and such if she had pockets.

Mendacis: Mostly wears the clothes of a scholar, wide robes and a light linen shirt and pants combination underneath. Robes are dark green while everything beneath it are of a lighter shade. Wears glasses he doesn’t need. Always has a bunch of scrolls with him in a beaten up old leather-bag. Somehow managed to aquire dark brown leather boots with dark green highlights. Would wear every single piece of green clothing in the world at once if possible. Preferable the ones that look shiny.

Prompt #3, 1/2/12

12 12. Cool.

How does this character dress? How would they choose to dress, if all options were open to them? Would your character perhaps choose the transvestite option, something that was darker, or just stick with what they usually wore.

Don’t forget to post a filled prompt to your own blog and tag it with featuring originallity so I can find it.

Prompt #2, 12/26/11

Cue obligatory holiday prompt.

So it’s the time of holidays about the Winter Solstice and time for a new year to roll around. What is your characters typical holiday season like? Is it a happy time, is it a sad time, or perhaps they just continue on with their regular lives.

Don’t forget to post a filled prompt to your own blog and tag it with featuring originallity so I can find it.

Anonymous asked: Obviously ,I got confused with the rules. I didn't see that only characters are to be submitted, but the actually prompt ideas are to be posted to our own page, then linked? Sorry for the anon, confused and embarrassed does not go well together.

Yes, when you fill in the prompt you post it to your own page. When you post it be sure to tag it with “featuring originality” so I can find it.

I thought I was clear when I said prompts don’t go in the submission box.

You post them and tag them with featuring originality so I can find them. The submission box is just for characters.

twelvewishes asked: awww, I'm quite sad to see that people don't write their prompts :( HEY guys! It's fun and let's you understand your characters a little bit better. I was looking forward to seing all your stories... To the one running this blog: I hope you don't abandon this place even with next to no submission. Or else I might have to flood it with mine. :D

I’m a notoriously lazy person sometimes, but I don’t think I’ll be abandoning anything any time soon.

Featuring originality prompt #1 - Ray

twelvewishes:

The prompt was: Your character is completely stranded in a place where none of the immediate residents speak any languages they know. For example, a small town in France or an undiscovered tribe in a rain forest.

Character of choice: Ray

Notes: This is silly and totally how it would happen. Continued in Vigil’s POV.

—-

He wasn’t really sure were the others ended up, but the locals were friendly even if completely incomprehensible, so that was probably not a big problem. Not that he would have worried, being busy with describing his journey through the land in great sweeping gestures.

Sitting cross legged in a circle with the family that had picked him up, he batted the children’s hands away from his eye-patch and recounted the one time his best friend was bested by a mule.

ラバ?” they asked, holding their hands to the sides of their heads, mimicking ears. Enthusiastically he pointed at them. “Yes, yes, exactly.” He then proceeded to make a sour face, scrunching up his forehead and turn down the corner of his mouth, pretending to ride an invisible mule. Everyone laughed. Yes surely, his friend seemed to be a rather grumpy fellow.

This continued until an excited villager came running in and started shouting and pointing at Ray. Seeing his confused face, the man proceeded to pull a face as though he had bitten into a sour apple, surprised when everyone started laughing.

Of course there could only be one stranger with that face. And they all went with him outside to greet Ray’s friend.

Prompt #1, 12/19/11

Your character is completely stranded in a place where none of the immediate residents speak any languages they know.

For example, a small town in France or an undiscovered tribe in a rainforest.

Don’t forget to tag your posts with featuring originality.

As of this coming Monday, we will be giving out weekly prompts.

Since feedback about the idea was positive, we’re going to do just as the title says.

Every Monday from now on I’m going to post prompts that will hopefully challenge you to develop your characters. I’ll do my best to avoid overly simple things like “What’s your character’s favourite whatever.” If I do put up anything like that it will also be asking for history behind why this is their favourite or something like that.

Whenever you fill out a prompt just post it and be sure to tag it “featuring originallity” so that I can find them and reblog them. Don’t put them in the submission box because I want to keep that freed up for just characters.

Four days and no submissions. I hope you guys are taking your time and working as much detail into your submissions as possible. It’s that, or is Tumblr being dumb again?

Anyway, how do you guys feel about us doing weekly challenges? Like Weekly Art Challenges and Weekly Writing Challenges I want to try and provide prompts for you to work with. In my case the prompts will of course be focused on expanding and developing your characters and not just your art and or writing skills. If I do do this I will try to make it so most of the prompts could be filled by drawing and or writing.

I’d also like to run this on a tagging system to keep the submission box freed up for just people’s characters. If you guys like this idea enough I’ll come up with a tag to put in posts and when I have the time I’ll go through that tag and reblog a handful or two of them each day until the next prompt starts.

If you like this idea please say so. This blog is completely dependent on your input and feedback in order to run.
